SPS21 was an incredible opportunity to push the bounds of broadcast production. Working with a global team of artists at DE-YAN and beyond, Unreal Engine, and XR Studios we brought to life a forest based on California State Parks and filled it with wonders from SNAP’s impressive suite of AR tech.

PRODUCTION RECAP

Sizzle video recap of the full broadcast showcasing some of the exciting creative direction and design of our AR worlds in Unreal Engine. Full broadcast can be viewed here. I operated in multiple roles throughout production ranging from art director in pre- and post-production as well as motion design generalist, editor, and compositor.

Spectacles Product Reveal Commercial

I had the incredible opportunity to direct a portion of the production featuring Evan Spiegel’s grand reveal of the new Spectacles hardware developments. My team and I were hoping to showcase how cool it would feel to wear this new hardware by creating a “fashion show” after dark where mysterious creatures show up with the glasses in the woods we had developed for the rest of the show.

The “alien” designs were born out of discussions with the CEO and project Creative Director. We were all hoping to achieve something both visually exciting and entwined with the wonder of Snapchat AR while also keeping the focus squarely on the glasses in close-ups. The delightful refractions and translucency of these creatures fit the bill perfectly.

Spectacles Product Demo

Closely following production of the spectacles commercial, I had the opportunity to work with some of our game engine artists and SNAP’s internal team to build a pipeline between UE4, Unity, C4D, and After Effects. This allowed us to animate cameras in 3D and pass them to the two engines to record those head movements in our forest world and match them to the reactive HUD SNAP had built for Spectacles. It was a super exciting puzzle to solve where something that might traditionally be an explainer became an exciting 1st-person narrative. I’m very grateful for the team’s efforts on this and how awesome it turned out.

WIP SELECTS

Over the course of a year, SPS21 took some very exciting and sometimes strange twists and turns through graphic design and branding, idea development, and experimental concepts. Here you can see some of the WIP, failed experiments, and process BTS that highlight some of my process and moments I grew from throughout the production.
